A Kid’s Best Friend

When I ask my almost 2-year old son who his best friend is I sometimes get “Mommy, Daddy” but I mostly hear “Mila, Max, Maddie”. Our dog and 2 cats. Being the animal lover that I am, hearing that immediately melts my heart. I am so thankful for the opportunity to raise my son in an environment where he knows the unconditional love you receive from an animal. And the bond that he is forming with them is truly heartwarming for a mother to witness.

Putting my emotions aside, research has shown that there are many benefits of a child growing up with family pets. Here are 5 pretty cool reasons you should consider adopting a furry family member:

1. Pets promote a more active and healthier lifestyle. My son and I “exercise” with our dog almost every day. Even if it’s just walking her around the block or running around the house, it’s still some form of exercise that we may not have engaged in without her encouragement!

2. Your child could get sick less often! It has been found that exposure to pet dander could improve a babies’ developing immune system and possibly reduce the risk of allergies.

3. Pet ownership assists with the understanding of responsibility and encourages nurturing. Allowing your child to help care for your dog or cat by feeding them, taking them on walks, brushing them, providing them with love and attention, is a great learning experience for their developing minds.

4. There is research that shows children with family pets have higher self-esteem as well. The constant companionship and unconditional love that an animal shows is no doubt a self-esteem booster!

5. Animals make kids happy! One of the first times we heard our son belly laugh uncontrollably (the most amazing sound to a parent!) was when he was watching our dog chase after a laser pointer toy. It was a wonderful moment for all of us.

Growing up with animals can improve the lives of children in so many ways. Give your child the greatest gift, a best friend with unconditional love to provide! Adopt a shelter pet today!
